Atlanta Newborn Photographer
Yay! You’re pregnant and thinking about your newborn session. Maybe you’ve booked with me, or maybe you’re just thinking about it, either way, I thought this post could help you out!
I love lifestyle newborn sessions for so many reasons; the teeny, tiny baby toes, the sweet little groans & grunts, but mostly I love newborn sessions because I get to capture the brand new love of your family. Whether it’s your first or your fourth, a new baby means new love and there is nothing more special in life than that right there.
Are you one the fence on if you’d like to do a lifestyle in-home session? Well let me sway you. I promise you that you will not be more relaxed than in your home. After I had a baby, the last thing I wanted to do was drive to a studio for our session. I think that there is beauty in posed studio sessions, but it just wasn’t for me and my family. I wanted to capture our home, the home we brought our baby to. I wanted the nursery that I worked so hard on for 9 months to be captured. I wanted to be “us”, and we are most “us” in our home. With our things and our dog!
Don’t feel your house is “worthy”? I’ve had families that have been mid-renovation, or not even in their own homes for their newborn session. That’s OK too. You still want these memories, I promise you! While having a beautiful nursery or perfectly decorated home is fun, it’s not essential to have for an in-home lifestyle session. If you want a lifestyle session, but don’t necessarily want to highlight your current living space, that’s perfectly fine and actually quite common. These are questions that I hear all the time, so I wanted to address it. You do NOT have to have a model home to have a beautiful session. I will find my favorite little corner of your home that has beautiful light, and focus on the bond of you and your family. THAT is what makes a session beautiful, not your things. Those are just bonus points.
Oh the fur-siblings. They need to be included too. We can’t leave them out of the session! And we know they do best in-home, too.
You’re here likely because you share my love of beautiful, bright light, neutral colors & classic images. I want you to love your images, I want them to stand the test of time. I think that the best way to achieve that is to keep your clothing neutral and classic. I want you & your family to be you & your family, so you can be super casual, or a little more buttoned up. Either style works with me, but keep it neutral. Whites, creams & pastels are all good choices. Whether you’d like to wear distressed denim with a linen t-shirt, or a flowing dress is completely up to you. I’m also happy to help you pick outfits out for your whole family. I’ll send you links or put together a style board, and we can pick together! Just let me know you’d like that little extra help. I love doing it!
The most important thing is for you to be comfortable. So wear what you feel best in. As for your baby, oh I think there is nothing more perfect than a newborn in a little onesie. You can still see their tiny little bodies, but with out the risk of getting.. messy. Ya know, the way you would if they were bare bottomed. Of course some families still want to get a few of their babies curled up in a diaper, or simply in the buff, and I am happy to do that if that’s what you like. It’s just not my go-to.
If there are clothing items that are sentimental, or simply ones that you just love, we absolutely can include them. But if you don’t really care, let’s keep it simple. The more we have to change your baby, the more irritated they will get. We want to keep them as calm as we can, and outfit changes are pretty much the opposite of that. Ha!
Great! I’ve convinced you that you want me in your home (right?! I hope!). Now what? Our session will be held on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, in the morning. I find that morning sessions usually go the smoothest of all my sessions, but let me know if you think that the light would be better at another time. Beautiful light makes for beautiful sessions, so if you think another time is better, please speak up! Sessions typically take about 2-4 hours, though they are not timed. Session times vary depending on your baby. If they need to stop to eat, soothe, or just snuggle, they’ll be plenty of time and space for that. Like I said, I come to your home is because I want you to be comfortable and relaxed, in additional to capturing your family authentically in your environment. I think your baby will be pretty comfortable there too.
The typical flow of my session goes like this; I start with the baby, I want to get all of the images that I can while your baby is the sleepiest & most settled. Then I start to individually incorporate mom, dad, and any siblings. From there we go to family portraits. Of course this all depends on your baby. If he/she isn’t very sleepy to start the session, I will swaddle them right up (I’m the swaddle master!) and we’ll start with family pictures and then take a reverse route to the session. No big deal at all. Your baby is in charge! Sometimes dad may need to head off to work before we wrap up our session. If that’s the case I will start with family and then dad + baby images. Then dad can leave and we will finish up the rest. Also not a big deal, and actually really common. I try to keep a similar flow, but every session is unique!
What do I bring? Now I really like to keep my sessions authentic to you & your family. I don’t do props, so I don’t bring much, but I do have a bag with a few things in it.
I bring a couple of white swaddles, plain white diapers, onesies (did I mention I love a baby in a onesie) and these beautiful crochet blankets. Fun fact: those are the very same blankets the royal babies were brought home in (well, from the same store in Great Britain). That’s it. You can use as much or as little of my things as you would like.
Now what do you need to do to prepare for our session? Feed your baby a big, full feeding about 30 minutes prior to my arrival. Have them dressed in the outfit that you want (or just in a diaper). If possible, have them unswaddled (just lightly wrapped in a blanket is perfect). And that’s it. Not much to do.
But MOST IMPORTANT is to be relaxed. I promise your house is not the messiest, your baby is not the fussiest, and you are not the most unorganized. All of my clients are new parents. I’ve done hundreds of newborn sessions and I promise you, I’ve seen it all!
